Development of fishery infrastructure
------------------------------------------
Fisheries industry development is hindered by the high costs of providing support infrastructure due to the wide dispersal of the country’s population. The Government has undertaken five major investment projects in the fisheries sector, which have laid the foundation for the development of the industry. Infrastructural investments include upgrading of the refrigeration complex and cannery at the Felivaru Tuna Processing Plant; establishment of freezing and cold storage facilities at the Kooddoo Fisheries Complex and Maandhoo Fisheries Complex; provision of ice plants; provision of fuel supply to fishing vessels; establishment of a boatyard for the construction of fishing vessels, and the construction of collecting and freezing vessels.
In addition, the Government, through the Ministry of Atolls Administration, also undertakes a long-term program of upgrading island harbours, and providing safe anchorage and berthing facilities on selected islands. Major fishing islands are given priority under this program.
In order to facilitate and support investment into fishery infrastructure, it is important to identify fisheries infrastructure requirements in major fisher communities; and to facilitate procurement of financial and technical support to establish such infrastructure.
